Why is my computer so slow and cranky?

Your computer might be sluggish for several reasons, such as:

  • Windows Vista, 7, 8.1 & 10 should have 4gb or more of memory (3gb if 32 bit Windows). If your computer runs Windows XP and has less than 512 MB of memory, you could need more memory. However, for security reasons, it is time to move on from XP.

  • A common culprit is an infection, a digital "uninvited guest" that can tag along when music, or games are downloaded from disreputable sources. This could also have been caused by a harmless-looking website you visited, innocent looking advertising or an email that you received and opened. (Don’t feel badly—the malicious programmers that plant these viruses are good at what they do.)

  • The hard drive (storage for your computer) could be nearly full or failing.

  • Your computer could need a thorough cleaning (especially if your computer is around pets or open windows).

  • Your Web-browsing speed could also be the fault of your internet service provider--not your computer. http://www.speedtest.net is a good site for checking your internet speed.

Since there could be more than one issue, you should have a professional examine it.

How old should a computer be before I have to replace it?

  • Just like cars, every year computers get smaller, sleeker and better-looking. But the truth is, if you're happy using the one you have and it's doing what you need, then you don't have to worry about getting a new one, yet.  You don't need a high-speed, high-power computer to run MS Word, browse the internet, send emails or use iTunes.

  • However, if your interests lean toward photo editing and archiving, video editing or advanced gaming, then you more need more power and more options.

  • We're happy to give free advice to help you make the most informed choice.

How do your services compare to those sold in stores or online?

  • We use parts from top brand manufacturers, and install only the software you want and need.

  • If anything requires replacement under the warranty, we can handle the paperwork for you, too.

  • Remember, delivery and set-up is free within our delivery range, while big box stores charge a significant amount for the same service.

  • We take personal pride in our work, and we aren't satisfied until you are.

What Internet service should I use?

  • If cash flow is an issue, then DSL or your phone company's high speed internet is a good bet (about $14.95 - $45 per month).

  • If you're willing to pay extra for speed, then your local cable company's broadband service could be the option for you (typically $30 - $50 per month).  *Note that prices and availability vary by region and service.*

  • Cable internet service is typically much faster than internet service from the phone company.

  • If you live in a remote area with no cable or phone company options, satellite service or internet service via your cell carrier may be a viable option.

How can I control what my children see?

  • Parental control software such as AVG Family Safety (formerly Besafe/Besecure) for $49 per year can help you. Other parental control software is available, and many offer free trials.

I run a small business and I don't have a tech vendor I can rely on. Can you help?

We can provide set-up and support for your entire office network, including:

  • Connecting your fax, printer(s) and phone to your computer

  • Working with your Internet service provider

  • Working with your vendors (such as an offshore help desk service) rather than you trying to handle it yourself

Is it true that Macs can't be hacked or infested with viruses?

  • Malicious programmers want to create the greatest amount of damage and chaos, so naturally they went after the computers used by 90 percent of the market, which are PCs. But now hackers are targeting both Macs and PCs.

  • No matter what kind of computer you buy, please install security software to protect your data and your machine.

Is there anything you don't do?

  • We do not work on Macs, tablets or cell phones other than basic connecting to home networks.
